Debunking Some of the Myths and Detailing the Facts about E-Cigarettes

For the uninitiated it can be difficult to separate the fact from the fiction regarding electronic smoking/vaping devices and what the real pros are, versus the cons. Much like any new product pertaining to health or recreation, the internet is flooded with contrasting accounts, myths and ‘facts’ regarding the safety and other facets of electronic devices.

This article seeks to debunk some of the more prominent myths out there and deliver something a little more factual to you, to help paint the full picture on contemporary e- devices.

1.) E-cigarettes are more harmful than regular cigarettes

This ‘fact’ isn’t based on anything remotely scientific, other than the fact that e-cigarettes (and similar products) contain nicotine. Nicotine is an addictive substance, this we all know for a fact – however, the majority of health risks from smoking come from the multitude if additives in traditional cigarettes, which are missing in electronic devices.

Furthermore, e-liquids often come in a range of different nicotine levels, including zero nicotine, giving the user much more flexibility than regular smoking means.

vapor2.) The vapor from E-cigs is pure, and not harmful

On the flip-side, this myth about E-cigarettes creating pure, harmless vapor when ingested is also untrue. E-cigarettes are devices designed for adults, and nobody is foolish enough to think that E-cigs don’t contain some harmful substances (nicotine and some solvents).¹

3.) Second hand vapor is just as bad as second hand smoke

This is not true, seeing as second hand smoke travels far from the smoker, and lingers in the air for a long time, infecting others. Whereas vapor products have minuscule amounts of the toxins of regular cigarettes, and dissipate very quickly upon exhalation.²

4.) E-cigarettes can help you quit smoking altogether

Although this is something of a subjective matter (there probably have been cases of this being true), it is predominantly unfounded. A handful of studies have analysed this claim and found it to be relatively weightless; with best results showing that those using E-cigarettes have cut down their overall smoking, but haven’t quit altogether.¹

5.) You don’t know what’s in them

This argument has zero basis, other than desperation. A number of studies have been carried out which examine the ingredients of E-cigarette vapors (which you will be able to find in no time, by quickly searching the web) – which have been generally classed as safe for human consumption if ingested in an appropriate manner and frequency.

6.) Electronic cigs contain anti-freeze

Again, this is nonsense. The seed of this rumor comes from the ingredient propylene glycol, which is in the e-liquids. This ingredient is sometimes used in anti-freeze production to lower the dangers of the chemicals, in the event that they are consumed by accident. E-cigs don’t contain antifreeze in any way, shape or form.²

These popular and longstanding six myths are regular arguments which pop up during the e-device debate (on both sides of the fence). By knowing the truth of the matter, or at least knowing that some of these are completely unfounded, you will be better suited to make your own decisions about the devices available to you.
